The game's chat is garbage. Getting the app is just a necessity. It isn't going to steal your information or take up more of your time. you meet new people with it more than anything. I'm not saying you're going to become friends and meet up for a beer either. The game is meant to bring people together and the app just helps since the game doesn't do it justice.
