You can but its not any fun doing 2 or 3 upgrades a week. At least not for most people. Im not complaining, just stating facts. if You want to play a free game that is also fun, this one is probably not for You.

How do You buy shields without investing real money? With the free gold You acquire You could buy 2 maybe 3 shields a week. So yes, You can play for free, but not in any way that would be fun.

A fair warning to anyone starting out, I agree with most of what you said. Though I dont think spending money automatically makes You a sucker. People are free to spend their money how they please.

A HUGE way to help balance that would be to bring back the cartel port to its original use. That way people could save their gold for talents instead of having to waste it on shields/resources. Is that what the developers want though?

You have to buy a shield, spend 4-5 consecutive hours playing, or spend a large amount of gold. Those are Your choices it seems. Spend a lot of time, or a lot of gold, that it the way this game is designed. It sucks too, because this game is pretty darn fun. Sucked a bunch of My playtime away...
