It protects a percentage of your loot. That percentage increases each time you upgrade it, sheilding up is always a more effective way but if you click your iron at the top of your screen (or any other stock) and you will see what is currently protected and what isn't :-)

There was a problem from the offset.. before starting event.. it stated finished 1-10 and you would get flare.. soon as we completed the event.. the rewards and sicario rewards all changed and alot of people including myself missed out. Then when event was over nobody could access sicarios or...

Im sure their will be something across the board by way of compensating people for losses etc.. FYI if you finish with 1620 points then, it then gets determined who finished event fastest (or so i read) so even if you finish sane points.. people are ahead if you on time spent. If that makes sense ☺
