I'm new to this game and was wondering, shield is to protect your resources from raid against your base and you would lose the shield if you attack other players. Does attacking outposts cause you to lose your shield too?

No! Only attacking players and resource centers that are from other players .. If the resource center is from the game "just written Resource Center" then i think you are able to attack. Anyway, you will be warned if you want to attack a player it would say "You have a shield, if you attack another player the shield would expire. Do you still want to do it?" .. and you just press NO.. that's it. Outposts can be attacked.

Exactly right and yes, resource centers marked "Resource Center" are okay you attack with the shield.
